Understanding Credit Profiles of Residents in Puerto Rico Post Natural Disasters
This report analyzes the socio-demographic and credit characteristics among the population in Puerto Rico. Using uniquely constructed credit bureau data, National Mortgage Database and Census data, we size the Puerto Rican population by their demographic characteristics, location, credit profiles, housing, and loan characteristics. We also analyze the migration trends in the island post hurricanes.
- Approximately 70% of the population in Puerto Rico is credit visible.
- Despite lower interest rates, only a quarter of all mortgages originated in the island in 2020 were refinance mortgages.
- By the end of 2020, the forbearance rate in Puerto Rico exceeded 13% as opposed to 4% among mainland borrowers.
