Mission

When the Borrower Help Center Network was first established during the housing crisis, they leveraged their role as trusted nonprofit intermediaries to help clients with Freddie Mac-owned mortgages at risk of losing their homes understand, identify, and pursue a foreclosure prevention solution with their mortgage loan servicers, whenever possible.

Now, as a result of the improving economy and more interest in pursuing homeownership, the Borrower Help Center Network has expanded their role to offer pre-purchase homebuyer education as well as financial literacy using tools such as the Freddie Mac CreditSmart® curriculum to help them achieve successful and sustainable homeownership.

Role

The Freddie Mac Borrower Help Center Network is a single source of mortgage help, with HUD-certified housing counselors providing the following services for their clients:

Preparing for Homeownership

  • Utilizing the Freddie Mac CreditSmart® educational curriculum to build important financial skills such as money management, credit, and responsible homeownership.
  • Learning the steps to sustainable homeownership through workshops and one-on-one counseling.
  • Comparing the affordable features of various mortgage products – including lower mortgage payments.
  • Getting information on down payment and closing cost assistance programs in their area.

Avoiding Foreclosure

  • Explaining, identifying, and pursuing the best foreclosure prevention option – working with both the struggling borrower of the Freddie Mac-owned mortgage and their mortgage loan servicer.
  • Helping supply missing information and documents to move the borrower’s application forward.
  • Providing holistic financial education counseling, including debt and credit management.
  • Informing struggling borrowers about neighborhood stabilization initiatives that may be available in certain Borrower Help Center locations.
